Books for Parents
Recommended reading for parents of children with dyslexia.
Overcomind Dyslexia, Second Edition
This book by Sally Shaywitz is the most comprehensive, parent-friendly book for parents of children with dyslexia. Dr. Shaywitz explains things in an accessible manner but backs it all up with science. This book also covers children of all ages. You will find information about your young child as well as information for college-age students. If you read only one book about dyslexia, I highly recommend it is this book.
The Dyslexic Advantage
Brock and Fernette Eide wrote this book that looks at dyslexia from a different lens. While dyslexia is often treated as a deficiency, there is a pattern of positive attributes that many dyslexic people share. This book looks at those positive factors and shares stories of successful dyslexics.
Proust and the Squid
Maryanne Wolf explains how reading is a human invention, how written language developed, and how our brains rearrange to learn to read. While heavier on the science side, this is one of my favotire books about reading.
Language at the Speed of Sight: How We Read, Why So Many Can't, and What Can Be Done About It
Mark Seidenberg is a cognitive scientist who addresses the deep topics of his subtitle. He explains how it is that we read, why so many struggle to read, and what we can do about it.
